In a bold step to reshape the telecom landscape, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has rolled out its 2025 Corporate Governance Guidelines. This isn’t just another regulatory checklist — it’s a complete framework designed to make telecom operations more transparent, accountable, and sustainable.

Executive Vice-Chairman Aminu Maida made it clear during the launch in Lagos: corporate governance is no longer optional. “We’re not just regulating for today; we’re safeguarding the future,” he said. With over 150 million telecom subscribers, the stakes have never been higher.

    Why This Move Matters Now

Nigeria’s telecom industry is no longer just about voice calls or data bundles. It’s the lifeline for mobile banking, online schooling, telemedicine, and even e-governance. The NCC’s new rules aim to make sure this vital sector is built on a foundation strong enough to handle future challenges.

    Putting Transparency Front and Center

One of the most impactful changes is the separation of the chairman and CEO positions. This limits power concentration and allows for more balanced decision-making. Boards will now need independent directors with ICT and cybersecurity expertise — people who can actually guide companies through today’s complex digital threats.

    A Culture of Accountability

The guidelines also require operators to strengthen internal audits and submit both mid-year and annual compliance reports. These reports must be approved by their boards, ensuring responsibility doesn’t just rest with management but is shared across leadership.

    What It Means for Operators

Yes, the changes may feel like extra work at first. But evidence from the NCC’s own reviews shows that telecom companies with strong governance structures consistently outperform others — in customer service, financial stability, and innovation.

    Building Global Trust

Good governance isn’t just about local impact. It’s also a signal to global investors. By adopting these standards, Nigeria’s telecom sector could become one of Africa’s most trusted, making it more attractive for partnerships and funding.

    The Road Ahead

The NCC plans a phased rollout of the guidelines based on licence categories. But Maida has been clear — enforcement will be firm. Companies that fail to comply risk sanctions once the grace period ends.
